In response to a request from Soma City, Fukushima Prefecture, we, together with JVIS Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as JVIS) and Hewlett-Packard Japan, Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as HP Japan), have implemented a project to digitally preserve and reprint photos taken during the disaster free of charge as part of efforts to support the recovery of the affected areas.
This project uses JVIS' photo duplication technology and HP Japan's online photo storage service "Snapfish" to digitize photographs that have been severely damaged by the powerful tsunami and muddy water flows, or that have faded due to the effects of bacteria, and will then save the photographs on DVD-R and reprint them for anyone who wishes.
In August 2011, we began accepting photos of the disaster at the former Soma Girls' High School building. We received 8,660 photos in the first batch, 7,522 in the second batch, and 8,137 in the third batch, for a total of 24,319 photos that have now been digitized.
