[Introduction example] Managed security service for Microsoft 365 provided to Tokyo University of Science

~ 24/7 security monitoring by experts strengthens IT environment security and reduces workload ~

SB Technology Corp.

SB Technology Corp. (Headquarters: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, President & CEO: Shinichi Ata, hereinafter referred to as SBT) is the Tokyo University of Science Corporation (Location: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, President: Yoichiro Matsumoto, hereinafter referred to as Tokyo University of Science). MSS for Microsoft 365 was introduced by SBT 's security experts to monitor the security of Microsoft 365 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
This reduces the workload associated with checking the large number of alerts that are detected 24 hours a day, and strengthens the security level of the IT environment used by many faculty, staff, and students.

■Background of introduction

Tokyo University of Science has been using Microsoft Office 365 since April 2013 as an IT environment used by approximately 2,500 faculty members and 20,000 students. In December 2018, we switched to Microsoft 365 A5 licenses with the aim of strengthening IT governance and strengthening countermeasures against increasingly sophisticated security threats. However, due to the wide range of environments used by faculty, staff, and students, a large number of alerts continue to be detected 24 hours a day, and a new issue has arisen in which the workload of the information systems department increases due to the confirmation work. When checking security alerts, it was necessary to decide which measures to prioritize, which was quite a burden, and there was a limit to how much work could be done 24 hours a day. To solve these problems, Tokyo University of Science considered introducing a managed service to monitor the security of Microsoft 365 on its behalf.
SBT was introduced to Tokyo University of Science by Microsoft Japan as a "vendor familiar with Microsoft 365 and has a high level of security knowledge," and MSS for Microsoft 365 through a PoC (proof of concept) to visualize Microsoft 365 threats, from identifying security issues through a simple assessment. The service content was evaluated as meeting the requirements, and the decision was made to introduce it in June 2019.

■Effects of introduction

Since the start of use in September 2019, there is no need for the information systems department to check alerts at all, and the number of man-hours has been reduced by approximately 6 man-days/month. Additionally, it is now possible to quickly respond to incidents when they occur, such as prompting users to take measures such as changing their passwords as soon as an alert is detected regarding a user whose credentials have been leaked.

Tokyo University of Science plans to continue strengthening Microsoft 365 security measures, including the introduction of Azure AD Identity Protection. Additionally, we will improve the security of the university as a whole and create a safe and secure IT environment by building an organization centered on the CSIRT that can quickly mitigate damage and respond after the fact.
SBT 's goal is to become a "cloud consulting and service company that enhances the competitiveness of Japanese companies," and we focus on corporate IT solutions and business IT solutions. We will continue to support customers' work style reforms with cloud and security, and aim to be a business partner that contributes to the growth of their core business.
