The activities of the ``Study Group on Text Layout for Next-Generation Web Browsers'' received the Good Design Award. SBT contributes by providing “FONTPLUS” etc.

SoftBank Technology Corp. (Headquarters: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Shinichi Ata; hereinafter referred to as SBT) is pleased to announce that the activities of the "Study Group on Text Layout for Next-Generation Web Browsers," a project in which the company participates, have been awarded the Good Design Award 2018 by the Japan Institute of Design Promotion (JDP).

The Good Design Award is given to things that demonstrate excellent design, and covers a wide range of areas, from industrial products to business models and event activities.

The "Study Group on Text Layout for Next-Generation Web Browsers" is an organization made up of private companies such as e-book device manufacturers, printing companies, and telecommunications carriers, and is working to promote the international standardization and spread of Japanese-specific expressions such as vertical writing and ruby on the web.

SBT provides the "FONTPLUS" web font to the "Vertical Web Promotion Committee," a website created by the "Study Group on Text Layout for Next-Generation Web Browsers." We are also contributing to the promotion of this style.

"If vertical writing were available in web design, wouldn't it give birth to a new culture of expression? This project makes me feel that this is possible. What's great about this initiative is that it isn't promoting vertical writing as a stopgap measure, but rather takes the approach of supporting international standardization. As vertical writing becomes possible in the future, it is foreseeable that new usability issues will arise. However, being able to freely choose between horizontal and vertical writing should be an opportunity to bring about more diverse and freer expression in future web design."
